What does the “BF” stand for in MAG365 BF?

BF stands for ‘bone formula’. You may be surprised to see a bone formula without calcium, and we are, in fact, the only company that manufactures a bone supporting supplement without calcium. We have been extensively researching calcium and calcium supplementation, and that is why we opted to leave calcium out of our formula. We found that a large chunk of the population gets enough calcium from their diets, and the human body recycles a good portion of its calcium. So we opted to design MAG365 BF supplement with magnesium, Vitamin K2, and Vitamin D3 as these are vital for proper calcium absorption and are difficult to get through diet alone.

While the ‘BF’ in MAG365BF officially stands for ‘Bone Formula’ we’ve heard it referred to as ‘Best Friend’, ‘Best Formula’, and even ‘Bear Formula’ by a customer who takes it to relieve premenstrual symptoms!

I have low bone density. Should I opt for MAG365 BF or MAG365 BF plus calcium?

Calcium has long been touted as the supplement for strong bones and teeth, however recent studies have shown that too much calcium can be harmful. These studies have also highlighted importance of cofactors like magnesium, Vitamin D3, and Vitamin K2 for bone health. These three nutrients work together to help your bones and teeth absorb calcium. Most of us get enough calcium from our diets and our bodies recycle a good portion of our calcium. It is detrimental to take calcium supplement without these crucial cofactors as without them your body does not adequately absorb calcium. Too much calcium then accumulates in dangerous places, including arteries (heart disease), organs (kidney stones), eyes (cataracts), joints (arthritis), and brain (movement and psychiatric disorders). Please take a close look at your diet and lifestyle to decide if the extra calcium would be beneficial to you.

I’ve read that vitamin K2 breaks down in the presence of magnesium.  Is this true?

Yes, this is true, and many supplement companies are not aware of this important fact. Vitamin K2 degrades in the presence of magnesium and calcium, and for this reason, we use a double microencapsulated K2 for both MAG365 BF line and PrizMAG plus. This ensures that the Vitamin K2 stays intact from the time it is made until the time it is consumed.

If a product contains vitamin K2 and an organic alkaline substance (magnesium or calcium), vitamin K2 could breakdown and we may potentially have as little as 20 % of the K2 left within only one month of the manufacturing date. When buying a bone supporting formula, ensure that a double microencapsulated form of vitamin K2 has been used.

What roles do magnesium and K2 have in Vitamin D absorption?

When supplementing with vitamin D3, it is imperative you have enough magnesium to activate it. Vitamin D3 (which is actually a hormone) remains in fat cells until it has enough magnesium to be utilized. You can find more information on this topic by clicking here.

Vitamin K2 prevents vitamin D3 overload by ensuring calcium does not accumulate in the wrong places. Vitamin D3 helps increase calcium absorption. A build-up of vitamin D is essentially a build-up of calcium in your blood. Boron, also included in our MAG365BF formula, is essential for optimal absorption of vitamin D3.

Why did you choose to formulate MAG365 BF with the specific nutrients you did?

Extensive research is the foundation of the specific formulation for MA365 BF. All the ingredients of this formula work synergistically to ensure proper absorption and utilization. For example, Vitamin D3 is not activated without magnesium, and without vitamin K2, vitamin D3 is not utilized. Also, all these nutrients are essential to direct calcium to the bones and teeth, preventing it from building up in unwanted places. For more information, see the article "Magnesium and Vitamins for Healthy Bones: Understanding Cofactors."

Is it safe to take MAG365BF during pregnancy?

Yes, all of our products are suitable for pregnant and nursing women. MAG365BF is especially useful during pregnancy, as the baby depends on the mother for the nutrients. Since more than 80 percent of the people are magnesium-deficient, it makes sense to supplement to ensure you have enough for yourself and your baby.

What is the relationship between calcium and magnesium?

Research suggests that the optimal ratio of calcium to magnesium consumption is 2 to 1. Dr Carolyn Dean, author of The Magnesium Miracle, believes that 1,000 mg of calcium and 600 mg of magnesium is the optimum level. However, calcium is easier to get via our diets. Researcher and chemist, Peter Gillham, believes that because we tend to get more calcium and very little magnesium, through our food, we should supplement with a 3:2 magnesium to calcium ratio. Bones require a 2:1 calcium to magnesium ratio, but the brain and the heart require less calcium and more magnesium to function.

If your diet is rich in calcium and you additionally take a calcium supplement, the supplement could leech away your magnesium reserves, as that excess calcium will draw out magnesium in order to be absorbed. Too much of calcium can also result in calcium deposits in joints and other parts of your body. Too much magnesium, on the other hand, is simply eliminated and is therefore much safer.

If your feel you need calcium supplementation, we recommend MAG365BF plus Calcium. This formula has calcium to magnesium in the ratio of 3:2 ratio and has the benefit of vitamins D3 and C along with potassium and magnesium – all required for optimal calcium absorption.

I noticed that there is boron in your MAG365 BF. Is boron safe to take during pregnancy?

Boron is found in nature as borates or boric acid. It is a naturally occurring substance found in foods like nuts, legumes, and some fruits and vegetables. Boron has a safe tolerable upper intake level of 20mg. Boron content in MAG365 BF is 3mg per dose, which is well within the safe range. For health benefits of boron, please click here.

If you are unsure about supplementing with boron during pregnancy, consider this study done on pregnant women in Turkey exposed to high levels of boron in their environment. The study stated: ““In spite of the high level of daily boron exposure, boron-mediated adverse effects on induced abortion, spontaneous abortion (miscarriage), stillbirth, infant death, neonatal death, early neonatal death, preterm birth, congenital anomalies, sex ratio and birth weight of new-borns were not observed.”

Is MAG365 BF beneficial for hormonal balance?

MAG365 BF is hugely beneficial for PMS, pregnancy and menopause. Many women report that magnesium supplementation results in a significant reduction in unwanted hormonal symptoms during these stages of life.

  • PMS: Magnesium helps to relax muscles and reduces tension.
  • Pregnancy: Magnesium helps to prevent pre-eclampsia and the general restlessness.
  • Menopause: Magnesium helps to alleviate the poor sleep many menopausal women experience. Additionally, having healthy bone mass is essential during the menopausal years, and MAG365 BF contains all the cofactors needed for healthy bones. Do I have to drink my MAG365 BF immediately after I activate it?

We recommend drinking MAG365BF within 48 hours of activation. The ionic properties make our magnesium highly bioavailable, which means that the acids in your stomach don’t have to break it down – it is in a form that your body can utilize right away. It you wait more than 48 hours before consumption, MAG365BF is still a great supplement with many health benefits, however your body will absorb it like non-ionic magnesium citrate, which has a 30% absorbency level (compared to the nearly 100% absorbency level of ionic MAG365m consumed within 48 hours of activation). For more information, see our article “Understanding Ionic”.

Does this mean I should be activating my MAG365 BF with cold water?

You can mix MAG365 BF in warm or cold water. In hot water the activation is almost instant, in approximately 15 seconds, in warm water it takes 45-60 seconds, and in cold water roughly 20 minutes are needed to activate. Also, there is no ‘fizz’ when you mix MAG365 BF with cold water, the only way to know that the supplement is activated is when the liquid goes from cloudy to clear. While the efficacy of vitamin C drops slightly at temperatures higher than 85°F, the negative effects of heat on Vitamin C become pronounced at 140°F. Water boils at 100°F, so the vitamin C in MAG365 BF will remain largely intact.

I noticed MAG365 BF is vegan.  What’s your source for Vitamin D3?

Our vitamin D3 is extracted from lichen—a complex, vegan-friendly combination of fungus and algae. Lichen has the unique ability to produce vitamin D in the natural form of cholecalciferol (vitamin D3), which is bioavailable and gentle on the body. All plant-based vitamin D comes in the form of D2, except that produced by lichen which is not a ‘plant’. A few supplements in the market use cod liver oil or Lanolin, a popular form of D3, extracted from sheep’s wool. Sheep are often sprayed or dipped in toxic pesticides to safeguard their wool against insects and rot, hence we prefer lichen. It is a purer product and is vegan.

Does MAG365 BF with Calcium contain the ideal ratio of both products?

MAG365 BF with Calcium contains a 3:2 Magnesium to Calcium ratio, which we believe it is the ideal ratio. See the question “What is the relationship between calcium and magnesium?” for more information.

Was MAG365 BF without Calcium produced for those who are already taking another calcium supplement?

MAG365BF plus Calcium was created for professional athletes and for those with pre-existing conditions that prevent them from assimilating calcium from their diet. Most of us are already consuming foods fortified with calcium (breads, juice, cereals, etc.). Unlike magnesium, which is water soluble, calcium is fat soluble, and it stays in the food you cook. Also, your body recycles approximately 70% of its calcium. These are the reasons why most people do not need calcium supplementation. This article does an excellent job of explaining why: https://www.newhope.com/blog/time-ditch-21-calcium-magnesium-ratio.  Especially noteworthy is the line: "The commonly agreed-upon ratio of 2:1 calcium to magnesium found in many supplements traces back to French scientist Jean Durlach... who stipulated the 2:1 ratio as an outermost not-to-be-exceeded level when considering calcium intake from all sources (food, water and supplements). This has been largely misunderstood and is taken as a recommendation of a 2:1 calcium-to-magnesium imbalance.”
